The Redwood Series is a cultivation of everything Maton has come to know about working with exotic Australian timbers, with rich tonal offerings to round out their roster to the fullest it’s ever been.

There is something magical in the tone produced by the combination of the Redwood (Sequoia Sempervirens) soundboard and Tasmanian Myrtle (Nothofagus Cunninghamii) back and sides. The Redwood is plantation grown and sustainably harvested from the Otway Ranges in Victoria, with the Myrtle from Matons longstanding partner in Tasmania.

Tonally, Redwood can easily be compared to Western Red Cedar, but there is a stronger treble presence and dynamic response than you would typically hear from Cedar. Tassie Myrtle has a smooth, Maple like tone, and when combined with Redwood seems to add a little extra warmth and sustain to the overall character of the instrument.

The result is intriguing. The tone coming from these guitars is a complex palette of all the frequencies we’d expect to hear, but there is something more going on as well. The Redwood adds its blend of overtones and a dynamic response that reacts to different playing techniques to keep things fresh & full of spirit.
